Fill 'er Up - FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

How do I use the app?

Just enter the details in the top half of the screen... Trip Distance, Fuel Price (currency does not matter), Car (or whatever vehicle) Mileage and the number of trippers (fancy word for people traveling with you on the trip) and press the Calculate button. You'll see the Fuel Needed, Total Fuel Cost and Cost per Head displayed at the bottom of the screen. That's it!

Note that the "Car Mileage" input here refers to the average MPG or KMPL of your vehicle. This is generally a 2-digit number, e.g. 24 (highway) or 20 (city), that tells the fuel efficiency of your vehicle. Please DO NOT enter your vehicle's odometer reading (total miles or kilometres traveled by the vehicle so far) in the "Car Mileage" input box.

How do I change the units to kilometres-litres (or miles-gallons)?

Press the Menu button on your Android device and select "Toggle Units" to toggle between the two unit systems.

I pressed the Reset button and the Trippers value got set / is still set to 1 instead of clearing up like the other values.

Yes! Thanks for noticing. I figured most people don't share fuel expenses so why make them type extra every time they want to calculate their gas expense. You can still change the value if you need to.

I restarted the app and the Mileage value did not get cleared like the other values.

I know! Ain't that cool? The reasoning here is that most people drive the same car most of the time and the car mileage does not change frequently. So why make you type in your car's mileage every time. That would be like me asking your name every time I saw you and I'm sure that's not a good thing. :o) If you look closely, you might also notice that the unit system is also retained after restart.

This app is useless! It doesn't calculate anything!

There seem to be some comments on the Market about the calculation not working for some people. As mentioned in the first FAQ, please DO NOT enter your vehicle's odometer reading (total miles or kilometres traveled by the vehicle so far) in the "Car Mileage" input box. You need to enter the average MPG or KMPL of your vehicle here. This is generally a 2-digit number, e.g. 24 (highway) or 20 (city), that tells the fuel efficiency of your vehicle. There might have been a communication gap here which we will rectify in the next update to this app. :o) Thanks to Christian Harrison Da Costa for this great tip!

If you're still unable to get a result, see the screenshots link to determine if you can see all the layout elements properly. Let us know if anything is missing from your screen or just send us (or upload on our FaceBook page) a screenshot of your screen / error so that we can resolve this issue. You can search Google on how to take a screenshot of your Android device. Though we cannot physically see the actual error on your phone or test this app on your specific phone model, we want this app to work for you. So any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Did you even test this app?

Due to a limited budget, I have only been able to test this app on my Samsung Galaxy Spica GT-I5700 running Android 1.5 (Cupcake) where it works like a charm. Please feel free to donate other phone models for testing if you feel the irresistible urge to do so. ;)

Do you maintain a changelog for this app?

Why, yes! You might even see your name in there if you have provided some useful feedback that resulted in a change. :) This is just a way of letting you know your feedback is appreciated. Worry not, your e-mail details will not be revealed in the changelog to protect your privacy. You can find the changelog here.
